Day 3: Decluttering a Boy’s Closet (with before and after photos!)

For the minimalism challenge on day three, I de- cluttered three items, but actually way more than three. For the record, the three items decluttered for this challenge were all papers/ discarded artwork no longer needed or wanted.

Here are some admittedly embarrassing before pictures:

Before: Boys’ Room Closet Needing Decluttering

Yikes, right?

His bed area had become a convenient dumping spot for clothes and toys.

This decluttering project was long overdue, and it felt great to tackle it. Of course, with big projects like that, things always get worse before they get better…

Where did all the stuff come from?! We had to put some of the things from his room out on the landing to make room to work.

I had him bring all his clothing and all the laundry in his room, out to the landing, where we will sort it tomorrow. He’s outgrown some items and doesn’t wear others, so we will pare it down to what he actually likes and wears.

For sorting the items, I had a garbage bag, a giveaway bag, a take to other rooms bag, and a container for him to keep the items he wanted to stay in his room, which we would later sort out into their proper places. Having these categories was very helpful to him as he picked up each item, and he was able to make decisions fairly quickly with some support and coaching.

Here are some “getting there!” photos — but the full after photos will come tomorrow.

What a relief! I took this picture before adding a bookshelf for him to store his items, and before moving his footlocker chest onto this dresser.

It was very rewarding to see my son confidently discard items he didn’t need or want anymore and save the ones that he finds useful or sentimental. I’m really proud of him!

My son, helping sort through some of the items from his closet when we were getting very close to finishing for the day, you can see the difference! Black bag is number two filled with trash today!
